General judgment holds the Buzzcocks' peerless singles, the definition of punk-pop at its finest, as the best expression of their work. However, while the singles showcased one particular side of the band, albums like the group's long-playing debut, "Another Music in a Different Kitchen", showcased the foursome's other influences, sometimes brilliantly. The big secret is Pete Shelley's worship of Krautrock's obsessive focus on repetition and rhythm, which transforms what would be "simply" basic punk songs into at-times monstrous epics. The ghost of Can, in particular, hovers even on some of the shorter songs — unsurprising, given Shelley's worship of that band's guitarist, Michael Karoli. "Moving Away From the Pulsebeat" is the best instance of this, with a rumbling John Maher rhythm supporting some trance-like guitar lines. As for the sheer rush of pop craziness, "Another Music in a Different Kitchen" is simply crammed with stellar examples. The leadoff track, "Fast Cars," starts with the opening of "Spiral Scratch"'s "Boredom"'s intentionally hilarious two-note solo intact, before ripping into a slightly bemusing critique of the objects in question. Most of the similar tracks on the album may be more distinct for their speed, but Shelley, in particular, always seems to sneak in at least one astonishing line per song, sometimes on his own and sometimes thanks to Howard Devoto via older co-written tunes redone for the record. One favorite standout: "All this slurping and sucking/It's putting me off my food!" on "You Tear Me Up." Top all this off with any number of perfect moments — the guitar work during the breaks on "Love Battery," the energizing yet nervous coda of "Fiction Romance," the soaring angst throughout "I Don't Mind" — and Another Music flat-out succeeds. [The 2001 reissue offers four tracks from the two singles released just before the album: "Orgasm Addict," "Whatever Happened To...?," "What Do I Get?," and "Oh Shit."] [Source: AMG]

As an admittedly old ass hip hop fan, I personally got to experience an amazing era in hip hop history.

Not because of the fact that I was old enough to remember clearly and actually buy, read and memorize the liner notes of albums released in both Golden Eras of Hip Hop (1986-1989 and 1992-1996). Not because I got to be there firsthand when legends like Run DMC, LL Cool J, Too Short, Rakim, KRS One, N.W.A., Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Ice T, Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte and Queen Latifah FIRST broke onto the scene. Believe it or not, it also wasn..t because I got to experience the culture of hip hop in it's truest and rawest form, either.

It was amazing because when I was growing up Black people actually bought and listened to intelligent, original, conscious or Afrocentric music en masse....those days are over and now long gone.

The world was different back in the late 80's and early 90's. Crack had just hit and ravaged the inner cities of America, they were in ruin and brown people nationwide suffered due to the Reagan/Bush administration and their terrible policies. Apartheid was still in effect in South Africa and Nelson Mandela was still serving time in prison. The Black Panther Party, The Young Lords Party, The Weathermen/The Weather Underground as well as AIM and the Incident At Oglala weren't too far off for that previous generation to relate to.

The turmoil and changes of the 60's hadn't yet dissappeared from the conscience of the people in the 70's. The same generation that witnessed the fallout of the Vietnam War and the assassinations of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were the ones rhyming about revolution and upliftment in the mid to late 80's and early 90's. They were born in the mid to late 60's or early 70's themselves so these ideals were still fresh in their minds.

This current hip hop generation was robbed of the same music that challenged us and made us think and question the world around us (at least on the mainstream level) by three different factors. First up, the Ice T "Cop Killer" controversy back in 1992 in which Time Warner and it's affiliates began dropping any artist that was controversial in any way following the threat of a nationwide boycott and fallout from bad press.

Secondly, the Telecommunications Act of 1996. With artist having to go for radio spins and MTV/BET video rotation, any conscious artists or group left on major labels would begin getting phased out and/or dropped due to "low record sales". By 1999, none of them were left signed to major labels.

Lastly, the national tragedy of 9/11 pretty much put the kebosh on any radical or conscious music groups on a major label. The last group of that kind signed was when Loud signed Dead Prez in 1999, the only LP they recorded on Loud Records was their debut "Let's Get Free". All of the groups and artists like Public Enemy, Brand Nubian, Poor Righteous Teachers, King Sun, Lakim Shabazz, Paris, X Clan, K.M.D., Movement Ex, The Coup and Two Kings In A Cipher were completely irrelevant to this current generation of hip hop listeners.

With no foundation in conscious music on the radio or video stations, conscious/Afrocentric music was deemed as corny. Take for example, Arrested Development. They were media darlings and widely acclaimed by music publications, but never truly accepted by the hip hop community. They made sing song rap and wore weird headdresses, kinte cloth and long flowing clothes. Since they were garnering so much attention during the early years of Gangsta Rap's takeover of the industry, there was a backlash against them from the Hip Hop community.

The same thing happened to PM Dawn who had the hit "Set Adrift Of Memory Bliss". They had a weird image, often wearing paisley and huge tie dyed robes with beads and dreads. They also made some kind of weird sing songy rap that the media and music critics loved, but the average hip hop fans dreaded. To get a proper idea as to how much these groups were frowned upon, think of the disdain that the Black Eyed Peas receive nowadays by the average rap fan...now multiply that by 20.

PM Dawn was ultimately thrown off of a stage by KRS One after they made some not too bright comments about him as well as Public Enemy in different magazine interviews. Arrested Development lost some members after their successful first album and by the time they released their second album, no one was checking for them.

The rise of West Coast gangsta rap and East Coast underground grimy hip hop pretty much proved to be the undoing of "positive" hip hop on the mainstream level as well. Given that these acts were considered not ..real hip hop.. and corny (well, they were), no one wanted to hear anything from any group resembling them in hip hop. By 1992, the age of the African medallion, Afrocentric/conscious hip hop crews like the Native Tongues and the Stop The Violence Movement were dead and gone forever.

After the Telecommunications Act, the focus turned to status symbols and material possessions. A group was judged no longer by the quality of it's music or lyricism/beats, but by how many records they sold, how many diamonds were on their watches or chains, or if they had a certain car, etc. With the wealth and opulence displayed in videos and name dropped in songs by Bad Boy Records, No Limit Records and later Cash Money Records, the Jiggy/Shiny Suit/Bling Bling Era had begun. Ever since then, if you weren't about making money, then it didn't make sense (cents).

Unfortunately for us that grew up with our parents Last Poets, Gil Scot-Heron, Umar Bin Hassan, Amiri Baraka, Mutabaruka and records playing and the Gods and Ansaars on the corner or the train station selling incense while selling books have to exist in a hip hop environment where grown men proudly carry around the title of "The Kufi Smacker" and revel in ignorance (Just so it's clear, I'm talking about the DipSet...no subliminals, fuck them niggas...Dig a hole, g'head, bury yourselves).

In this hip hop climate, artists like The Roots, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Jean Grae, Common and Little Brother are immediately lumped into the same category..."backpacker music". Related R & B/Soul artists such as Raphael Saadiq, Dwele, Bilal, Erykah Badu, Amel Larrieux, Jill Scott, and Teedra Moses are all lumped into the Okayplayer category as well.

Both genre designations point to one thing "artists who have more White people than Black people buying their albums". To anyone with common sense, this is stupid. Why? Because any "popular" music act, regardless of race or genre, has more White people than Black/Latino people buying it out of sheer numbers.

With Blacks making up between 12-13% of the United States 300 million residents (approximately 1 out of every 8 Americans), and White consumers making up between 60%- 70% of the units bought in urban music, to use the "more White people than Black people buy their music" argument is beyond stupid.

If you look through the CD collections and iTunes libraries of most White college students across America, you'll find plenty of T.I., Ludacris, Young Joc, Young Jeezy and Rick Ross albums...so that says what about them exactly?

The fact does remain, that if you were to go to a show for most hip hop acts from the early to mid 90's or any underground crew, the audiences are overwhelmingly White...but whose fault is that?

It takes me back to the legendary dialogue from Spike Lee's film "Mo' Better Blues" between Denzel Washington's Bleek and Wesley Snipes' Shadoe about why Black people abandoned the Blues and Jazz as well as stopped frequenting Blues and Jazz clubs.

The same dialogue was used in The Roots.. classic album "Things Fall Apart"..if you aren't familiar with it, you should definitely see it (this coming from a dude that knows Questlove's Roots album liner notes by heart).

It is distressing to know that artists that grow up on the blackest of Black music and emulate those same masters of Black music on their projects will fall on deaf ears when they try to release their music to an audience of Black people that, in essence have no taste for "Black" music.

The music that is marketed to "Black" or urban markets is ACTUALLY really pop music in nature, being that it's made by major labels that are looking to move units. Just because it's played on BET means nothing...BET is, after all, a Viacom network.

I understand that people, regardless of color don..t like being preached to or having anyone acting like they are holier than thou...if you then take that and add it to an entertainment medium that people use to ESCAPE the problems and ills of the real world, you now have a TURNED OFF captive audience.

Whereas in the 60's and 70's Blacks and Latinos were actively fighting for their freedoms and the right to be considered more than subhuman/third class citizens are they actively SEARCHED for music that empowered them and gave them a sense of pride in their identity , the youth of today aren't doing that anymore...even though they clearly should be MORE conscious of what..s going on in the world considering it is the Information Age.

We've already been through the what, when ,why, and how's that conscious music disappeared from the mainstream, became remanded to the underground and is now regarded as "corny" or wack to the majority of listeners..the question remains? How is solely the fault of the music industry? Don't these kids have parents, aunts, uncles and older siblings that can tell them about Assata Shakur and Elaine Brown so were not relying on Common to do it?

BET has a new show premiering soon called "American Gangster" that will highlight the lives and crimes of figures like Stanley "Tookie" Williams and "Freeway" Rick Ross...wouldn't it be MORE beneficial to the youth if they made programming that highlighted the lives of former activists like Canada Lee and Paul Robeson or members of the Young Lords or Black Panthers? Or are they afraid that it wouldn't be "entertaining" enough.

The bottom line is that you as an individual have to choose whether or not you want to buy or listen to Afrocentric or conscious music. If you choose not to it's your prerogative. It just doesn't make sense to immediately dismiss it as corny or lame...unless you think that all of those people that fought for freedoms they'd never live to experience and died for you to just have the right to be here and respected as a human being as corny or lame.

Do you think "Freeway" Rick would've put his life on the line to SAVE his people as opposed to poisoning them for financial gain? No...but Medgar Evers and Fred Hampton did. Now that's gangsta.

One.

The Bishops "LIVE!" 1978 - 10"LPFrom the best looking rock band this side of The Motors . . . The Bishops' particular variety of rowdy, rumbustious R&B has always functioned best live, which is why this album cuts their studio elpee to shreds fairly effortlessly.
About three quarters of the material has shown up on previous Bishops' recordings ("Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White", "I Need You", "Baby You're Wrong", "Takin' It Easy" and the sublime "Train Train") but all of 'em with the possible exception of "Train" sound a lot better here.
The whole thing's topped off with a couple of comparative newies ("I Don't Live It" and "Too Much Too Soon" composed by singer Dave Tice and rhythm guitarist Zenon De Fleur) and a sprinkling of revibes: ("Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In" from the repertoire of, believe it or not, Fleetwood Mac, though it must be said that Mac ain't played that song for a while), Sonny Boy Williamson's "Don't Start Me Talkin'" and The Strangeloves' "I Want Candy" (featuring - gulp - a drum solo).
Right now, The Bishops have a single - a revival of Sam And Dave's classic "I Take What I Want" on Radio One's playlist, plus another studio album lined up and ready for Chiswick to disgorge upon a suspecting public. If the world is once again ready for an enthusiastic and finely crafted brew of tough guy pop and drunken R&B, then they might as well get it from The Bishops as from anybody else, because in the two or three years that they've been going they've waved the flag for their kind of music as hard as anybody against both apathy and more restrictive types of New Wave mentality.
This album is as convincing a demonstration as could be required. Miss out and it's your loss. - Charles SHAAR MURRAY / NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS, May 27, 1978THE BISHOPS:
Dave Tice: Vocals, Zennon De Fleur: Guitar, Johnny Guitar: Guitar, Pat McMullen: Bass, Paul Balbi: Drums

... work initially done in Memphis, as a real precursor to that city's soul scene, and later cut also in Chicago, with a really hard-wailing approach!

JACKIE BRENSTON "The Mistreater"Tracks here originally appeared on the Chess and Federal labels - and although Jackie started out working with Ike Turner's group, he's later featured with a host of other players, including Memphis jazzmen Phineas and Calvin Newborn! CD features notes on Jackie's brief rise to fame, plus session details - and titles include the classic "Rocket 88", plus "Tuckered Out", "Juiced", "Hi Ho Baby", "I Want To See My Baby", "True Love", "Mule", "You Won't Be Coming Back", "The Mistreater", "Much Later", "Leo The Louse", and "My Real Gone Rocket".
Recorded at Sun Studios in march 1951 by Ike Turners Kings Of Rhythm, with vocal by sax player Jackie Brenston, the complexities of Sam Phillips' Sun Records deal with the Chess brothers required it to be credited to Jackie Brenston and The Delta Cats! Ike was so miffed when the record hit number 1 that he would not let Jackie sing it on stage! However, Jackie was featured on many more records, on a variety of labels; raucous rockin' dancin' jump blues to die for every one! Here are the best of them - every one a classic - a jump blues dance party for sure! A rich and wonderful first time CD collection of Jackie Brenston's best! Includes many unissued gems!

trax:
1. Rocket 88 2. Come Back Where You Belong 3. Tuckered Out 4. My Real Gone Rocket 5. Independent Woman 6. Juiced 7. Hi Ho Baby 8. Leo The Louse 9. Blues Got Me Again 10. Starvation 11. Make My Love Come Down 12. I Want To See My Baby 13. My Baby Left Town 14. Fat Meat Is Greasy 15. Jackie's Chewing Gum 16. You Won't Be Coming Back 17. 88 Boogie 18. Lovin' Time Blues 19. True Love 20. Mule 21. Gonna Wait For My Chance 22. What Can It Be 23. Mistreater 24. Much Later

I'm sure some of you readers have seen other blogs report on it but my boy What It Is from Tree Beats is starting up a new beat battle site at I Hook A Beat Up starting Sunday, February 3rd. Basically, a song is provided (from the likes of Mr Mass from Mass Corporation, Dr OK from And It Don't Stop, DJ Nes from Dirty Waters, or Scholar from Souled On) then several producers will take the song and sample it and flip it the way they want over the next week. The beats are then posted and a panel (including Travis from WYDU, Eric from WTR, Max from Hip Hop Isn't Dead, Mike Dikk from Dumpin.Net, Andrew from Strictly Beats and King E from the Justus League boards) will discuss what they liked and/or didn't like and then it goes to a public vote. If you remember the Lawn Jawns, it's very similar.

The same concept is used on sites like FutureProducers.com and the list goes on. If you wanna be down with the League Of Extraordinary Hip Hop bloggers then hit up the site and show 'em what cha got a la Just Blaze. As for myself, I'm still in the middle of writing yet another colossal blog and researching a huge project coming up in the near future (February is gonna be crazy over here..believe it!).

So if you gotta crew, betta tell 'em. We can battle in the alley around the corner with a big boombox and maybe later we can all get together and put on a big ass show to save Miracles...We need all the help we can get (and $250, 000)!

I also made a new post regarding the Super Bowl XLII media day and Plaxico Burress attempting to channel Nostradamus on my collaborative NFL blog Armchair Linebacker earlier this morning. Check it out.

Michael era o ultimo membro original da banda e não chegou a ver o Who The Fuck Is God terminado. O disco é muito bom e contem três covers, do Batmobile (faixa 7), Rolling Stones (faixa 5) e Stray Cats (faixa 4). Psychobilly de primeira classe, direto da Suécia.

...1979's Cross Cuts was exactly what you wanted and expected from them.

THE BISHOPS "Cross Cuts" 1979 (Chiswick Records CWK 3009)In 1975, two rock'n'roll enthusiasts who owned the record shop "Rock On" in London, started the record company Chiswick Records. Those two guys were Ted Carroll and Roger Armstrong, today moguls in Ace Records. Their first signing to Chiswick Records were The Count Bishops. A true powerful rock'n'roll band with deep roots in rhythm & blues and soul. Combine this with the energy of punk and you might get the idea how they sounded. In other words, the perfect band to kick-start Chiswick Records.
The Count Bishops shortened their name to just The Bishops after their debut album and were counted as a British band, even none of the members were in fact British. One from Poland, one American, one Irishman and two Australians were the classic line-up. But British pubs and clubs was their playground.
The classic foot-stompin' soul hit "I Take What I Want", of Sam & Dave fame, opens this enormous party album. Faster than the original, more guitars and a very marked rhythm who goes straight to the feet. Fat guitar riffs and a powerful solo delivered by American Johnny Guitar makes this a winner! Fast and furious is also "What's Your Number" with Australian Dave Tice playing the harmonica together with his raw, but strong vocal effort. Irishman Pat McMullen got his bass steady rolling with Australian Paul Balbi keeping the beat to the feet on the slide-guitar led "Your Daddy Don't Mind", softened up a bit with some acoustic guitar. Killer track! On "Good Times", once a hit for The Easybeats, Jools Holland (now well-known music-host for BBC) joins with a few piano licks, very tasty. A tough guitar riff by the Polish Zenon de Fleur fires up "Too Much Too Soon", again a fast one with a stunning guitar solo. Party! Dave Tice uses the lower register of his raw but elastic voice, singing in a more relaxed mood on "Rolling Man", a more subdued track with good slide guitar from the start. "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonite" was never one of the memorable moments with Fleetwood Mac, but it sure kicks ass here with all it's energy and violent power. Great! Even more energy and speed up the border of being frenetic, is "Hands On The Wheel". Pheew !! Nearly too much, but great fun! Otis Redding's soul ballad "These Arms Of Mine" gets a wonderful treatment here, Dave Tice's voice is just great together with horns and shows that the band easily handles this kind of expression as well. Outstanding track! "Mr. Jones" ends this classic pub-rock album in a perfect way, rocking good and leaves you hungry for more!
But this was the last album of The Bishops. The main reason was probably that guitarist Zenon de Fleur was killed in a car accident just before the release of this album. This release is dedicated to him.
So far "Cross Cuts" is not released on cd, but 8 of the albums 14 tracks are available on the excellent 27 track compilation "The Best Of The Count Bishops" (Chiswick CDWIKD 150) which hit the shops in 1995.THE BISHOPS:
Pat McMullen: Bass, vox / Dave Tice: Harmonica, Vox / Paul Balbi: Drums, Vox / Johnny Guitar: Guitar, Vocals, Piano, Slide Guitar / Zenon De Fleur: Guitar, Slide Guitar, Vox / Jools Holland: Piano / Noel Norris: Horn / Ruan O'Lochlainn: Horn

... Go to the shows. Support it. There are very few bands like this out there that are this accessible. Do your part.

The Paladins "El Matador" 2003"Like the Blasters, The Paladins continue to play roots music, from rockabilly, early rock'n'roll, rockin' blues, western swing and jumpin' jive. This cd covers all of these generes. If you like the early 50's Sun Records sessions, you'll love this cd, the music sounds like Sun stuff from the early 50's. Most of this cd is straight up rockabilly and some rockin' blues, and a little honky tonk western swing, in Hank Willaims Sr. tradition. The bands sparse trio sound of Guitar, slap stand up bass and Drums is true to the instrumentation of the 50's rockabilly bands. I saw this band last evening at the Doll Hut in Anahein, and they played many songs from this cd, it is without a doubt thier finest release yet (and that's saying a lot). All 9 cd's they recorded are generally exellent rockabilly roots cd's, but this one is their best yet. Pick it up and you won't be sorry." - By BigCockJohnson (Southgate, CA "Da Ghetto Baby")trax:

... The singer-guitarist who has collaborated with filmmaker Kenneth Anger and rockabilly pionner Charlie Feathers, has spent most of the past two decades crafting a revisionist pop culture history - one that seamlessly fuses the aesthetics of Dean Martin and Jerry Lee Lewis" - David Sprague - Variety

Tav Falco's Panther Burns "Shadow Dancer" 1995"...and MUSIC MAESTRO is the perfect way to end this album: first it's like a 50's movie and a lonely weary hunk dreaming of lost loves is surrounded by giggling girls and he asks the waiter for a drink w/ chaser "to chase the blues away", then suddenly it's like it's just him and his piano and he's nursing his broken heart in the bar night after night, but still so elegant and suave and undaunted and so contemporary and continental, like how Tom waits would sound like if he's a lot more handsome…
Then we hear again, for a second, the noise of the bar around him, he gets up and says good night to the waiter and tomorrow we know he's ready for another one night stand…a short, beautiful song that captures the gorgeous cycle of melancholy and ill-fated amours that I guess love is all about, for some…" - Miss FTav Falco's Panther Burns:

The Hard-Ons' origins can be traced to Western Sydney's Punchbowl Boys High School, where all three band members were students. The multicultural trio of drummer/vocalist Keish De Silva (of Sri Lankan descent), guitar/vocals Blackie (Yugoslavian heritage) and bassist Ray Ahn (Korean ancestry) were initially too young to play gigs in pubs, but honed their skills playing at parties and school dances. After all turning 18 years old, the band made its first 'proper' live debut in June 1984 at Ultimo's Vulcan hotel. Quickly gaining a considerable following, the band released its debut EP (Surfin On My Face) the following year.
Subsequent recordings like Smell My Finger, Dickcheese, Love Is A Battlefield Of Wounded Hearts and Yummy! were well-received by fans and set the blueprint for the 'Hard-Ons sound': messy pop-punk with metal and psychedelia elements. The band also showed their independent punk spirit, with the members deliberately controlling their own careers: recording, booking and promoting themselves, creating their own artwork, choosing support bands and even managing the merchandise desk whilst on tour. These unconventional decisions, combined with songwriting talents, powerful live performances and a healthy sense of humour earned the band a large following in Europe as well as their native Australia. If you like early Descendents and any of that mid 80's pop punk sound, buy this, these guys are fast and melodic and funny. Good fast beats, clean melodies and humorous lyrics make this a buy for any punk fan.

The Meanies are an Australian indie rock band. They formed in 1989 and after a hiatus in the mid-late 1990s, started gigging again in 1998. They have been playing and recording regularly since then.In the 1990s they were particularly well-known in the Melbourne music scene, and toured in Australia, Japan, Spain, Germany, and France with acts including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Superchunk, Fugazi, and the Beastie Boys. They recently released a DVD entitled The Meanies: A Seminal Australian Punk Tale, which features a documentary, 11 video clips and a live concert filmed in 1994. The band toured the east coast of Australia in support of it in August-September 2006.
This is a "greatest hits" of sorts that includes many of their out-of-print 7"s. They are Australia's best known and most recorded independent band, with no less than 14 releases in Australia and overseas. (Sympathy and Lance Rock 7"s in the States.)Formed in 1989, they've toured Japan, the Pacific Northwest, and Europe. The four Meanies are Linky Meanie on vocals, DD Meanie on Guitar, Wally Meanie on bass, and Ringo Meanie on Drums

The past month has been chock full of odd occurrences in the world of television in film (not to mention a bunch of writers being laid off by film studios). Not only is it the awards season in which the Golden Globes and SAG Awards are given out, but the Sundance Film Festival takes place in Park City, Utah.

The Sundance Film Festival and Slamdance are followed by the Independent Spirit Awards where new independent films can find audiences and studios to purchase and distribute them. The films that gained the most awards were No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, The Diving Bell And The Butterfly and Away From Her (I haven't even thought of seeing the last two of the aforementioned films)

The films that premiered at this past Sundance Film Festival that I'm looking forward to seeing on DVD/in theaters are "Choke", the adaptation of the Chuck Palaniuk (Fight Club) novel, "Trouble The Water", "Sleep Dealer", "The Wackness", "Where In The World Is Osama?", "American Teen", "Hamlet 2", "Ballast" and "American Son".

There weren't as many films being bought early on in this year's festival but I expect more films to get bought as time goes on. It sucks that the WGA strike is still going on and people are just given out awards in short, borderline terse ceremonies. At least the Independent Spirit Awards still exist...too bad they wont air until February. The final major show of the awards season is the Academy Awards, the Oscars will occur on February 24th without any pomp and circumstance (which might be a good thing).

The tragedy of this past few week is that Heath Ledger, one of the best young actors in Hollywood has passed away very recently of what's been called an accidental overdose on January 22nd. He had just recently finished filming the new Batman film "The Dark Knight" and he was so immersed in the role of The Joker that he was having trouble sleeping, he took too many Ambien (because two only helped him sleep for an hour) and he never woke up.

The loss of Heath Ledger (pictured above) stung because he was only 28 and he wasn't afraid of taking risks and doing films that weren't considered mainstream such as Lords Of Dogtown, Brokeback Mountain and I'm Not There. This loss is made all the more sadder by the fact that exactly one week prior (January 15th) troubled former child actor Brad Renfro (Sleepers, Bully, Ghost World, The Jacket, 10th & Wolf & The Informer also pictured below) passed away as well at the age of 25. Both of them will be missed by film fans the world over. Rest In Eternal Peace, Heath Ledger and Brad Renfro.

The Hunting Party- This joint flew under the radar, rent it and watch it.

Trade-I saw it online and it was pretty damn good. I can't wait to see a better quality version of this powerful film about the ills of human trafficking.

He Was A Quiet Man-I didn't even realize that it came out on DVD already. I've got to see this, now.

Right At Your Door-Independent as fuck...I dug it.

Tracks:

1.: Got It Goin' On
2.: Crawlin' Back
3.: Activate Her
4.: On And On And On
5.: County Blues
6.: Wray Gunn
7.: Lover Her So
8.: I Got No Time For Fools Like You
9.: Ghetto Blaster
10.: Check Yourself
11.: You Can't Win

'The Beat', ou 'The English Beat', foi formada em 1978, em Birmingham, e foi uma das mais importantes do chamado ska revival. Além de vários singles presentes nesta compilação, este disco traz também um dos seus primeiros singles gravados pela 2 Tone. Trata-se de um cover, que na minha opinião, é uma das versões mais fantásticas já gravadas de S. Robinson, "Tears of a Clown".

Tracks:

1. Mirror In The Bathroom
2. Best Friend
3. Hands Off She's Mine
4. Too Nice To Talk To

"THE SUN COUNTRY YEARS, 1950-1959" Vol 11 VAThe final album in this box set features 12 unissued alternate versions of songs by Sun's big three country artists: Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis. It also has 3 unissued titles by the great Onie Wheeler.
Let's get one thing clear. An unissued alternate take of a vintage Sun recording is worth many times its weight in Hot Hundred mush. When Carl Perkins or Jerry Lee Lewis sang a song, it nearly always came out differently. Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" is an early take with a little different feel than the hit version. (Martin Hawkins)

... this album was listed as #23. (Buy his essential new power pop book at Not Lame before it goes out of print.)

THE ROOKS "Encore Echoes" 2000Finally! Their long out of print self-titled debut and "Chimes" EP are combined onto to one CD and as a bonus the tracks from "Double Dose Of Pop" are thrown in for good measure. 23 trax total from one of the most respected and much accoladed pop bands in the world. Here is the template for that praise. Wonderful liner notes from John M. Borack flesh this one out as being one of the MUST have items in any self-respecting collection of great music. Trouser Press Record Guide has this to say about this beloved material, "There have been countless Beatles imitators over the years, but few artists have demonstrated the ability to build on the group`s tuneful legacy with enough originality to add their own twists and shouts... The Rooks is one of the rare exceptions." Music Hound wrote, "They`re propelled by Kristin Pinell`s authoritative, fluid guitar leads, which add a graceful but powerful punch to Mazzarella`s words and music...Mazzarella`s songs are expressive, emotional, and well versed in both the human and pop music tradition." As classic as it gets. For more information on the amazing and truly influential The Rooks, please visit their web site: www.therooks.com

... a Falco LP generally features obvious mistakes that, for his fans, are more than made up for by Falco's excitement and enthusiasm.

TAV FALCO'S PANTHER BURNS "Midnight In Memphis" - 10th Anniversary Live 1989 (New Rose Rec)Sometime in the late 80's I went to a Pather Burns performance on a riverboat in yes, Memphis TN. I happened to be living with friends of the bands. If I remember, The Hellcats warmed up for Pather Burns with their hip swaying guitar. Very Sexy! Then Tav wowed us with a great live performance that included his version of "Brazil", theme to the movie. It remains one of the most desired and elusive tracks for my collection. I am not sure that this album captures that energy but I was there, swigging vodka at midnight in memphis. Reviewer: G. Schoep (Bozeman, MT USA)
When the sun was a-settin on the 1980s a memphis howlin commenced and the guitars was out of tune and everyone had to stand on the whiskey licked floor and take their turn at the big drum or the mic. Tav Falco puts together a true crime life combo of Memphistophelean proportions...Jim Dickinson...Alex Chilton...the gals from the Hellcats. Put this coaster on and burn! Reviewer: J. Kerr (Waukegan, IL United States)personnnel:

... the amazing Amos Milburn, arguably a huge influence on later rock and soul too! Like a few other key contemporaries - such as Wynonie Harris and Roy Brown - Milburn had a great way of hitting topics that were honest, open, and everyday - tales of boozing and loving delivered with very down to earth lyrics, and a good bit of wit as well. Many tunes feature some great piano lines sewn in nicely alongside the vocals - triplets that really rock the tunes nicely, although often in a gentle sort of way.

É desse disco o primeiro single de sucesso da banda, a música "Get Down And Get With It".

Tracklist:
01-Hear me calling
02-In like a shot from my gun
03-Darling be home soon
04-Know who you are
05-Keep on rocking
06-Get down and get with it
07-Born to be wild

On April 5th, 2000, a new movie reached theaters and it created quite the controversy. The Palm Pictures film was called "Black and White" and it was a collaborative effort between Wu Tang Clan exec Oli "Power" Grant and writer/director James Toback (both pictured below). The movie was an experimental piece in which each performer/actor had a specific amount of information and key plot points that they were supposed to get across in each scene but other than that they were allowed to freestyle their own dialogue. It made for quite an interesting final product considering that many of the key players had never acted before and/or weren't trained thespians of any kind.

In order to show the contrasts between the lives of these Hip Hoppers and the young White students that idolized them, a wide array of Black and White pop culture icons were cast in the film. On one side we have Oli "Power" Grant in the protagonist's role as Rich Bower, the infamous Harlem gangster who's trying to get out the game and go legit as an entrepreneur/manager in the Rap game. His main artist is Cigar, played by Wu Tang Clansman Raekwon and his other artists are Raekwon's proteges American Cream Team (including the infamous Lord Superb and the now deceased Chip Banks).

Among the celebrities with roles in the film were boxer Mike Tyson, New York socialite Marla Maples, model/actress Claudia Schiffer, Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton's fine ass daughter Kidada Jones, newcomer Kim Matulova (she is now a VCA model) and New York Knicks guard Allan Houston. The cast was supplemented with veteran performers such as Robert Downey Jr., Brooke Shields, Jared Leto, Joey Pantoliano and Ben Stiller alongside younger actors like Elijah Wood, Bijou Phillips, Gaby Hoffman, William Lee Scott, Eddie Kaye Thomas and Scott Caan. The Wu Tang Clan (Method Man, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah) and Sticky Fingaz also made appearances in the film as well.

The movies opening scene shows Rich Bower (Power) having sex with two teenage White girls in a public park while Lord Superb stands by as an armed guard. It then shows the parallels between the home life of one of the girls he was smashing and himself and his associate Cigar being denied studio time at Sorcerer Sound because of Rich's reputation as a gangster. Then came a bunch of convoluted storylines that were somehow strewn together involves themes of identity and being true to yourself.

From there the movie becomes a mish mash of improvised scenes, some of which are interesting and others are just awkward. You can clearly notice where the looping and voiceovers are put in certain scenes so you aren't totally confused. In some instances they repeat unnecessary information that's already been covered (as in the case of the D.A.'s son working for Rich Bower). Some scenes (including all of the sex scenes) are pretty much just used for shock purposes. Mike Tyson's scenes are necessary viewing even though his involvement with the film is a head scratcher in itself. Scott Caan's scene was interesting considering the fact that he was in the Hip Hop group The Whooliganz with Alchemist back in the days.

Around the time of the release of the film there were several talk shows all over cable talking about the phenomenon of White youth and why they identify themselves with Hip Hop culture and Black culture (or what they believe "Black culture" to be). I taped one show that aired April 10th, 2000 on Fox News Channel called "The Full Nelson" hosted by Rob Nelson and the panel consisted of Hakim of Channel Live, William "Upski" Wimsatt, former member of The Source Mind Squad and author of the books "Bomb The Suburbs" and "No More Prisons", Smokey Fontaine, the former music editor of The Source and entertainment editor at HBO's Volume.com (he has since written "E.A.R.L: The Autobiography Of DMX") and Mia Mask, editor of Cineaste.com (she is now an associate professor in the Drama and Film Department of Vassar College).

This panel was all about the sensational aspect of the film, White youth being immersed in Hip Hop culture. Rob Nelson kept asking Upski how he felt about being a "wigger". Upski wouldn't go for it and later on Hakim of Channel Live explained that "wigger" was not an acceptable term and that the word was coined by racist Whites that didn't approve of the actions of their Hip Hop loving peers. Then the panel was steered towards the question of "Are executives trying to force White kids to act Black?". This question was shot down by the panel (especially Hakim).

It was clear that Rob Nelson was not prepared to moderate a discussion about racial politics or Hip Hop. It was then that Hakim, Upski and Smokey just took over the discussion. Nothing was learned except that White youth make up 70% of Rap music sales and that White youth loving Black music was nothing new. No fresh, eye opening exchange of ideas or new ground was broken. Just like the movie the panel inspired.

The movie was made to make people think and open up dialogue about this fascinating cultural phenomenon...that didn't happen. The film was released less than 8 years ago and damn near no one even remembers it ever even coming out. Several American Cream Team songs appear in the film (but didn't make the soundtrack) such as "Kid Encyclopedia", "Perb's World", "Where You At", "Volochi Papers", "Heavyweight Champ", "Set It Off", "Hold Your Head", "Urban Life", "Club Life" and a bunch of other Raekwon joints that had yet to be released.

Power was the executive producer of the Black And White soundtrack and the musical consultant for the film. The film was a promotional vehicle for the upcoming American Cream Team project "Only In America". The film failed to crack the Top 10 after the first week in the theaters and fell 60& in the second week. It was out of theaters after only 26 days and generated only $5.2 million dollars. It's budget was $10 million and it didn't break even for a long time even with the DVD rentals and sales. To make matters even worse, Chip Banks was shot and murdered in November 2000 and the American Cream Team album was shelved indefinitely.

I fully recommend this clusterfuck of a Hip Hop/indie film to all Hip Hop and film fanatics to see just to know what not to do. If you do rent this film then watch it with the director's commentary after you've seen it the first time and watch James Toback's video diary in the Extras to further illustrate my point about this film. Below I have included the soundtrack to round out the full "Black And White" experience.

... arguably one of the first great soul talents to rise from the south at the start of the 60s, but an artist who'd fallen far from fame by the time of this early 90s set!

ARTHUR ALEXANDER "Lonely Just Like Me: The Final Chapter"The record was cut at a time when Alexander had all but given up music, and was driving a bus in Cleveland - but it shows a singer who's lost none of his power over the years, and who's very much at home with his own songs. Production is by Ben Vaughn, and while it's possibly not as "authentic" as some of that done on soul revival sets in recent years, we actually like it all that much more for that. Instrumentation is mostly small combo, and features plenty of piano and organ from Spooner Oldham, guitar from Dan Penn, and work by other soul studio luminaries - on titles that include "If It's Really Got To Be This Way", "Go Home Girl", "Every Day I Have To Cry", "Lonely Just Like Me", "All The Time", "There Is A Road", and "Mr John". New version re-sequences the tracks to correspond to Vaughn's original intent - and it also adds in a huge amount of bonus tracks - including 4 songs, plus interview parts from an appearance by Alexander on Fresh Air in 1993; 4 demo tracks recorded in Vaughn's hotel room for the record; and a live version of "Anna (Go To Him)" recorded at the Bottom Line in 1991. All this, and a really cool package with pull-out inserts!

... but a host of other great work inspired by his own genius - recorded by artists who all do a pretty darn good job of copping his groove!

"SOCK IT TO 'EM J.B." 20 Fabulous Tracks Inspired By James Brown VAThis excellent set looks at the prime years of that legacy - the late 60s/early 70s funky 45 underground, which was filled with James Brown-inspired tunes from a variety of artists from all over the country. Yet like most attempts to imitate genius, the real charm here is when the groups go slightly wrong - when they step out of line from straight JB copycatism, and bring either their own genius, or own mistakes into play on the tracks. Compiler Gilles Petard has done a wonderful job of pulling together the best of these tracks -- tunes that start out sounding a lot like James Brown, but nicely take a left turn somewhere along the way - often with surprising results! And almost even better, many of these numbers veer into real James Brown jamming territory - that great "part 2" that was almost the better part of the James Brown legacy than part 1! As with the label's Absolute Funk series, there's full notes on the music, as well as dates and original single release information - on titles that include "I Found You" by James Hanns & The Soul Entertainers, "I Can't Stand Myself" by Mona Lisa, "Funk Line (parts 1 & 2)" by Fabulous Shalimars, "Sh'Mon" by Mr Dynamite, "Soul Brother's Testify (parts 1 & 2)" by Chester Randle's Soul Senders, "Sock A Poo Poo 69 (parts 1 & 2)" by Maurice McKinnies & The Champions, "Country Girl" by Gino & The Gentlemen, and "I'm A Love Man With A Love Plan" by Jules & The Dynamics.

"Swamp Music/Modern Cajun Lovers" Music Of The Bayou & French R'n'R Vol. 4 VA... There is a ripoff/rewrite of Merle Haggard's "I Am a Lonesome Fugitive" entitled "Cajun Fugitive" and credited to Belton Richard. Also featured are the rhythms introduced by Johnnie Allan and D.L. Menard, which would be picked up later by Beau Jocque and ground out with a vengeance to the blaze of electric guitars alongside the accordion. This collection begins in 1963, when the sounds of guitars (lap steels for the most part) make their appearances for the first time, and ends in the late '80s. The Menard and Allan tracks are standouts on this volume, including Allan's wonderful "Karvilien Alleman." In fact, Allan was easily Cajun music's Elvis, full of sexy swagger and theatrical performances. There is an outstanding track by the plagiarist Richard, however, called "Roll On, Wagon Wheel," where the fiddles engage the guitars in a slippery little dexterity contest. The riff for the tune is more like Speedy & Jimmy than the Hackberry Ramblers, and it slips and shimmies all over the key of C before coming to a startling halt. By the volume's end, it's easy to see how the growing influence of electric country music and rock & roll were encroaching on the traditions of the Louisiana Cajuns. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guidetrax:
1. You Are A Great Lover, But You Can't Cook Cajun Food - Johnnie Allan 2. Cajun Fugitive - Belton Richard 3. La Cravate - Harry Fontenot and the Cajun Trio 4. Rebecca Ann - D.L. Menard 5. Karvilien Alleman - Johnnie Allan 6. Roll On Wagon Wheel - Belton Richard 7. If Teardrops Were Pennies - Harry Fontenot & Cajun Trio 8. Oh Yea Yi Yi - Belton Richard 9. Oh Lucille - Belton Richard 10. Samedie Soir Aux Magasin - Johnnie Allan 11. J'ai Pleuré Pour Toi - Belton Richard 12. La Bonne Cord, Mauvais Yo-Yo - Harry Fontenot and the Cajun Trio 13. She Didn't Know I Was Married - D.L. Menard 14. Where Are You My Jolie Blonde? - Johnnie Allan 15. The Water Pump - D.L. Menard 16. Mom And Dad Waltz - Belton Richard 17.
