Exactly 60 years ago, Egon Erwin Kisch, a german-speaking Czech journalist and novelist, died in Prague, Czech Republic.Egon Erwin Kisch was "der rasende Reporter" ("the raging reporter"), a journalist whose interest in marginalized parts of society and the world outside Europe endeared him to a large number of readers. He became a figurehead in the fight against fascism. Later generations of journalists regarded his documentaries as exemplary and pioneering. He is admired to this day for the high literary quality of his journalitic work.
Kisch was born into a German-speaking Jewish family in Prague, at that time part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and began his journalistic career as a reporter for a local German language newspaper in 1906. His early work is characterised by an interest in crime and the lives of the poor of Prague, taking Jan Neruda, Emile Zola and Charles Dickens's Sketches by Boz as his models. He deserted from the army in World War I in October 1918 as the war came to an end and played a leading role in the left-wing revolution in Vienna in November of that year. Although the revolution failed, in 1919, Kisch joined the Communist party, a political allegiance he maintained for the rest of his life.
Between 1921 and 1930 Kisch, though a citizen of Czechoslovakia, lived primarily in Berlin, where his work found a new and appreciative audience. In books of collected journalism such as "Der rasende Reporter" (1924), he cultivated the image of a witty, gritty, daring reporter always on the move, a cigarette clamped doggedly between his lips. His work and his public persona found an echo in the artistic movement of "Neue Sachlichkeit", a major strand in the culture of the Weimar Republic.
On February 28 1933, the day after the Reichstag Fire, Kisch was one of many prominent opponents of Nazism to be arrested. He was briefly imprisoned in Spandau, but as a Czechoslovakian citizen, was expelled from Germany. His works were banned and burnt in Germany, but he continued to write for the Czech and émigré German press, bearing witness to the horrors of the Nazi takeover.
In 1937 and 1938, Kisch took part in Spanish Civil War. He travelled across the country speaking in the Republican cause and his reports from the front line were widely published.
Following the "Munich Agreement" of 1938 and the subsequent Nazi occupation of Bohemia six months later, Kisch was unable to return to the country of his birth. Once war broke out, Paris, which he had made his main home since 1933, also became too dangerous for an outspoken Jewish communist whose native land no longer existed. In late 1939, Kisch and his wife Gisela, sailed for New York where, once again, he was initially denied entry. He eventually landed at Ellis Island on December 28, but as he only had a transit visa moved onto Mexico in 1940.
He remained in Mexico for the next five years, one of a circle of European communist refugees, notable among them Anna Seghers and Ludwig Renn.
Kisch died two years after his return to Prague, shortly after the Communist party seized complete power. There are contradictory reports of his attitude - as a German-speaking Jew - to the party in this period as it began to develop the anti-semitism which culminated in the "Prague Trials" of 1952 and supported the expulsion of most of Czechoslovakia's ethnic Germans.

Last night was a classic showdown between the cream of the crop and the cream of the crap. The Miami Heat fielded a squad full of cats I'm used to seeing at NBA Summer League contests and free agent camps. Besides NBA vets (and former Celtics) Ricky Davis and Mark Blount this team featured a motley crew of whatshisfaces (Stephane Lasme, Blake Ahern, Joel Anthony, Kasib Powell, etc.) and nobodies (Chris Quinn, Earl Barron, Alexander Johnson). Jason Williams, Shawn Marion and Daequan Cook all registered DNP-CD's for the contest as well.
If the Celtics have blown out two of the best teams in the entire NBA (Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Hornets) at home then what would they do to this pathetic squad? The answer was evident when the Celtics were up 27-4 after just 7 minutes of play. The starters got significant rest and the Celtics still lead 50-30 at halftime with little chance for resistance from a Miami team with only 9 available bodies on the bench.
This game was a sad sight as the Celtics held the hapless Heat to 17-59 shooting (.288) and 4-21 from 3 point range (.190) and none of the Celtics starters even played longer than 25 minutes. The Celtics stifling defense managed to hold the Heat to an NBA record low 17 total field goals, the lowest ever total of the Shot Clock Era. Wow.The game ended with the Celtics winning 88-62 and the fans being treated to yet another early appearance by Gino on the Jumbotron. The C's were led by Leon Powe's 17 points and 13 rebounds (6 offensive) in 27 minutes. Kevin Garnett racked up 12 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists in just 21 minutes, Paul Pierce contributed 10 points 4 assists and 2 steals in 24 minutes and Ray Allen had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in 25 total minutes. James Posey scored 7 points off the bench and had a team high 4 steals.
Tomorrow, the 58-15 Boston Celtics play the 29-44 Chicago Bulls in Chicago. Hopefully they lose by less than 20...we don't need the Celtics to get big headed on us with playoff time coming up soon.
One.

THE SAILS "The Sails"
But everyone loves a good sugar buzz, and this U.K. quintet delivers the glucose-laden goods. Lead singer/songwriter Michael Gagliano is clearly enamored with all things Beatles and Byrds, circa 1965 and 1966, and if the end results are highly derivative (and they are), he at least has the good sense to imitate some of the most glorious pop music ever recorded. "Chocolate" and "Peter Shilton" feature letter-perfect "Ticket to Ride" jangly guitar lines and harmony-drenched singalong choruses, while "Can You Hear Me" recaptures the magic of "Rain," backwards tape loops and all. Even the band's lightweight lyrics encapsulate the era in microcosm, and hark back to a time when countless British Invasion groups could ride their chiming guitars and "stay" and "away" rhymes right to the top of the charts. It's a classic sound, but one that could easily grow stale. Fortunately, Gagliano's strong melodic gifts transform one of the hoariest of all rock & roll templates into something fresh and memorable. "Make My Day" and "Firebell Alley" update the template slightly, honing in on the late Beatles psychedelia of Magical Mystery Tour. Although songs such as "See Myself" and "Wonderland" venture dangerously close to Herman's Hermits territory, and all its attendant sickening sweetness, for the most part Gagliano manages to stay just this side of the bubblegum machine. The Fab Four have been inspiring new music almost from their inception, and every decade sees the rise of new acolytes, from the Raspberries and Badfinger through the Smithereens and Crowded House through Oasis and Franz Ferdinand. The Sails follow in that grand tradition of doing little new, and doing it gloriously. They've produced a delectable homage to the Beatles, and have emerged with yet another fine variation on a seemingly inexhaustible sound. - Review by Andy Whitman (ALL MUSIC GUIDE)trax:

It has been a while since i have posted any crusty grindcore so i think i will take some time to do that right now to show that i still love this type of music. This is some very sweet grindcore from Washington d.c. right here. There is only 3 people in this band and they do not have a bass player. Which is sort of strange. You can find there myspace here.

Tracklist:

Well, somebody has got to do it and I guess the joke’s on me.
LEAD WEIGHT was one of the most important NWOBHM or - generally speaking - Metal compilations ever made. Nevertheless, it’s never been re-released in its orginal form and that, ladies & gents, is a major Rock’n'Roll crime! Guess it’s kinda hard to explain what this album meant (& means) to me and many others back in the days before internet, personal computers, cell phones or shaved buttholes. I could just go on, telling you stories about “authenticity”, “true” or “false” music or “how it was”, but honestly, I don’t give a rat’s arse. What’s an earthquake in the desert when nobody registrates it? Earlier this day, I played PAGAN ALTAR’s “Lords of Hipocrisy” and during the title track (?), the singer starts his falsetto-lamento that nothing in this world is true. “Bullshit”, I thought to myself, “you Heavy Metal Morons” (HMM). Of course it’s exactly the other way round. Everything is real. And that’s what made me think of this compilation, of what “truth” and “biography” have in common, how such categories structure what simpler minds might call “taste” or “preference” and I imagined Slavo Zisek grinning at me, tapping me on my back, saying “well, my friend, if at least you’d listen to better music”.
So here we have one such moment of overall Dalai Lamaness again and I tell you, as soon as I’m sick of repeating it (it lasted 341 posts so far!), I’ll call it a day here: This blogs only serves me. If you wanna follow me into the depths of idiotic music played by idiotic people (for idiotic people), sometimes barely capable of holding their instruments, sometimes wanking so hard on them it gives you a stiffy or wetty yourself, then you’re welcome. If not, well, no offense but I just don’t care. You may put on your original 1977 leather jacket and just go fuck yourself with it.
Ooops, in vino veritas. Let’s imagine, you’d ask me which song I liked best here. Guess I’d say it’s WHITE SPIRIT’s “Cheetah”. Music never and I tell you that - never! - got or gets any better than this. I know, you heard that before, maybe from myself even, but trust me - you can burn all the records you have and just save yourself this song. Let’s say you’d be the last man (or woman or else) on earth and so was I and you had the fortune of meeting me in the ruins of Newcastle, under a sky of the color of molten lead, you’d just have to sing the chorus of “Cheetah”. I’d lower my guns and invite you to spend a nice evening or a couple years at that with me. So it goes with the rest of this comp, basically. VENOM has an early version of “Angel Dust”, a straight edge song, ARAGORN tickles you with “Noonday” and RAVEN calls for the “Inquisitor”, just in time, before the lads from FIST are “Throwing in the Towel”, because the AXIS’s “Messiah” is “Down the Road” (according to BITCHES SIN). Well, don’t you mind SATAN’S EMPIRE’s “Soldiers of War” “Flying high” - WARRIOR told you so. And, fuck me, BLITZKRIEG’s “Inferno” may come to me any day!
Download “Lead Weight – H.M. Rock Compilation from Neat” here. It’s a rather large file (102 MB).
User comment: By: PärKiller comp that I´ve never heard. Every time I hear Raven I think to myself "Why don´t I put on All for one more than I do?" Long live Raven!
User comment: By: John ScharpenI still have this record, but haven't listened to it in awhile (too many records, not enough time). Thinking back, I'd have to say that the Aragorn song is my favorite, closely followed by Venom, Raven, and Blitzkrieg. I'm glad to see you posting it here in its entirety.
User comment: By: GeoffIncredibly good compilation. I bought it when it hit the shops and just like you I'm still so much in love with it. Thanks so much for your blog. It's the best thing the internet has to offer to me. The sound quality of your rips is astonishing (I'm an audio engineer) and the write-ups deserve to be collected and published in a book or magazine. Please make follower 341 more postings!!
User comment: By: AdminSteve - I normally do not endorse suggestions from my readers, haha, but in this case, it makes perfect sense.
User comment: By: SteveI'll have to have a friend with hi-speed internet to download this but I sure appreciate the post! There were a lot of killer singles on Neat maybe some of them you could post someday. How about a repost of that Blitzkrieg 7" (hint hint)?
Visit here to subscribe to these commentsUser comment: By: Frank Mossi:-) Love your alcoholic prose. The comp is indeed PHANTASTIC! Great how much of the 70s you still hear in the majority of songs. This makes VENOM really stand out. They were BRUTAL in 1981. "Better to reign in hell than to serve in heaven". YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Repost from September 2006. Freshly ripped in interstellar sound quality. For more of this NWOBHM group, check the recent “Lead Weight” post.
My summer of 1977 came a bit later. I don’t recall whether it was just one single record or much rather a chain of happenings and music that opened my ears to new music (and my eyes to girls). Sometimes I think it was the first Iron Maiden LP that started it all, then again I remember how much Judas Priest’s “British Steel” sounded “new”. But maybe it was the rawer stuff from what was called The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, like the bands on “Lead Weight”, a compilation album from Neat Records. During the summer of 81, I checked out whatever was freshly released and looked un-pop. Be it the Dead Kennedys, Venom, Minor Threat, Killing Joke or else; I liked some better than the other and bought whatever I could afford (and I hated Minor Threat because of the singer). When somebody would tell me that Venom sounded like a bad punk band, I couldn’t care less, like I didn’t give a shit about AC/DC not being “cool” enough for the trendies. One or two years later, when the first storm was over, labels would become more important to me because correct labeling would signify the expert and I wanted to become one. Also, the village in which I was doomed to live, had its first few Punks hanging around. They all went to high school and had nice middle class parents. I hated them all. Living on the countryside, far away from the bigger cities, Heavy Metal was Punk.
BLITZKRIEG impressed me one helluva lot. The song “Lead Weight” still had that 70s feeling but on the same hand already sounded “modern”. The 7″ was of another caliber. Twin guitars, consequent riffing (listen to “Buried Alive” - is that so far from “Hillside Strangler” from The Hollywood Squares?) and a slightly more aggressive singing was of a quality that was unheard of. It’s strange with my taste, I sometimes think: Some old records I like because they sound like they were recorded half an hour ago. Others I appreciate because their sound is deeply rooted within a specific moment in time. BLITZKRIEG belongs to the latter category.
Everybody kept saying how rare this 7″ was, so I just thought I might try and contact the band directly. It was one of my first fanboy letters in english. I sat there for quite a bit of time really, picking word from word from a dictionary I had used years before, when I started teaching myself some english by translating AC/DC lyrics (I never had english in school or later, so blame all my mistakes and bad grammar on those song lyrics). However, to my great pleasure, I received a package a few weeks later with a whole bunch of BLITZKRIEG 7″s, autographs and some stickers. It had worked!
Here’s the complete 7″ for you - and don’t you say this is not spectacularly good!
User comment: By: Sean Hogan"I didn't give a shit about AC/DC not being "cool" enough for the trendies" Absolutely, I'm all about NO guilty pleasures...the ultimate "punk act" is to not give two shits what other so-called punks think about you for "daring" to listen. I can't think of too much more that's MORE juvenile than judging people for liking other sorts of music. And Killing Joke is the SHIT...just got a shirt of the first LP!
User comment: By: MikeSo i just downloaded Lead Weight, jammed the Blitzkrieg track and remembered how bad ass they were. I searched for more and came across this post from a long time ago but the links were broken. 20 minutes later it's reposted! THat's fuckin Sweet. Thanks!
User comment: By: Good bad Music for bad, bad Times! / SATAN- Kiss of Death, b/w Heads will roll 7″ (Guardian Records, UK, 1982)[...] leaves me breathless whenever I hear it. "Court in the Act", the album from 1983, had BLITZKRIEG's Brian Ross on the micro, one of my fave singers ever. This LP is one you must have. The weird style [...]
User comment: By: JONASLINKS ARE DEAD! PLEASE, RE UPLOAD
User comment: By: Turdwould have never beleived punk and hc people would love this. saw BLITZKRIEG many times live in the early days of nwobhm and it always was a mjaor blast! to me there was only band infleshing the nwobhm monicker more and that was ANGEL WITCH.
User comment: By: E.You're quite right, brother in metal. In the meantime I mamaged to get a copy of the LP on soulseek and now I know why I didn't keep it ... A real letdown. They even mangle a SATAN song.
User comment: By: Anonymousgreat to see a punk with taste!
forget the blitzkrieg lp (time of changes). it's nothing compared to the 7". you will be disappointed!
User comment: By: AnonymousCorrection: Blitzkrieg was on the Creeping Death 12" not the $5.98 ep my mistake, sorry about the momentary brain freeze.
User comment: By: AnonymousMisfits also got very popular after Metallica covered them and the price of Misfits records went through the roof.
Visit here to subscribe to these commentsUser comment: By: E.Oh yes, definately! Also the untitled first DIAMOND HEAD lp (later released as "lightnng to the nations") has obviously been highly influential to "kill em all". they're all great records, couldn't value the one higher than the other, but sometimes I find it a bit sad to see that diamond head or blitzkrieg are more or less forgotten nowadays (and again: "am I evil" got really popular when metallica covered it. i too knew it from the "creeping death" ep).
two more severe cases of rock'n roll injustice.

Van Dyke Parks "Clang Of The Yankee Reaper" 1976
Though CLANG includes none of Parks' original compositions, the set contains the essence of his sound and shines a light on his skills as an orchestrator and as an arranger. The title song is classic Parks, its lyrics evocative of movement, changing times, and Americana. The steel band sound that had empowered DISCOVER AMERICA is again employed to fine effect, most notably as one of the orchestral flavors in "Another Dream." A wonderful parade-band version of Pachebel's "Canon In D"--sounding like football game halftime entertainment commandeered by a group of scholars--closes the album.

While just about all of their albums are winners, for many fans "Harsh 70s Reality" is the unquestioned best Dead C release, a fact it's hard to argue with. Art and sheer rock power collide beautifully on this album, which transforms murky noise and open-ended jams into serenely chaotic wonder. That may sound like a strange assessment, but "Harsh 70s Reality" is as ambient as it is feedback-riddled, and the creative threesome behind it all know just how to balance everything out. "Driver UFO," the 22-minute-long opener, demonstrates this knack quite well, with a gentle keyboard part emerging halfway through against the rumbling hum and scrape of the guitars. It's arguably also the most song-oriented album from the group in a traditional sense, though the usual combination of recording approach and performance isn't exactly going to win over the VH1 audience. When the three add in vocals to the mayhem, everything sounds even more distanced and unsettling. Thus, on "Sky" the lead vocal sounds like the singer is on the verge of collapse and the backing shouts hollow and creepy, even as the main riff makes for one of the band's most accessible efforts. "Constellation," one of the most violent numbers (though as ever the quality of the recording makes it feel more gauzy and interesting), benefits even further from the gently deadpan vocal, like Sonic Youth but not so concerned about making things clear. One of the funnier moments comes with the start of the audibly from-the-other-side-of-the-venue live recording "Suffer Bomb Damage," especially since Robbie Yeats sounds like he's about to break into War's "Lowrider." Though "Harsh 70s Reality" is available on CD, the original vinyl is worth seeking out for the extra two tracks that couldn't fit on the digital format, especially the astonishing "Shark." Many musicians have been born in or have lived in Mississippi. One of these important ones is David "Dave" Myers, a very respected person for his musical abilities. On October 30, 1926, Myers was born to Mary and Amos Myers in Byhalia, Mississippi. Both his parents were musical, but Mary played the guitar only at home, while Amos played the guitar at parties in private homes (Moon 34-35). Myers also had three brothers who were musical. Louis played the guitar in the band the "Aces." Curtis played the piano, and Bob played the harp (Living Blues 35). Myers married and has one son, Davie, Jr. (Johnson).Myers grew up as a child listening to Lonnie Johnson, a pioneering blues and jazz guitarist and banjoist who lived in the basement of Myers' family home (Center Stage Media). Myers, along with his brother Louis, sang in a Baptist church choir Michael James states, "Myers was brought up in Mississippi where he learned how to play the guitar" However, in 1942, Myers along with his brother Louis, moved to Chicago where his career began. According to Santelli, "Dave Myers is one of the many unheralded architects of the city's post-World War II blues scene" (305).
Myers sang and played the guitar and bass. He and his brother Louis began playing house parties with Junior Wells, a harp player. Then after Junior Wells left, the brothers, with Little Walter Jacob, a blues musician who played the amplified harmonica, formed a group called The Jukes. Little Walter joined the band in 1952 and worked with Myers for most of the next three years. The Myers brothers left the harmonica player and reformed the Aces with Junior Wells and Fred Below again for a while and then with Otis Rush. David and Louis Myers played guitars and Fred Below drums. The first recordings were for the Checker subsidiary of Chess in 1952. According to Santelli, "Myers left Little Walter in 1955 and joined his brother in a new band led by guitarist Otis Rush that also included drummer Odie Payne, Jr." (Santelli 305). Myers was also hired by Fender Guitarist during the 1950's to promote and demonstrate the electric bass around Chicago (James). His percussive style earned him the nickname Thumper.
When the Aces reformed in 1969, Myers had the chance to record with the rock 'n' roll band in which Louis played and also Latisha Tucker, SHS researcheras accompanist to many other great artists (Larkin 2977). James notes, "Myers has performed and recorded hundreds of albums with literally every Chicago blues legend." He appeared on hundreds of records by artists such as J.B. Hutto, Roosevelt Sykes, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy; Otis Spann, Robert Lockwood Jr., and many others. He released his only solo recording in 2000 called, "You Can't Do That" on the Black Top label, featuring Kim Wilson and Rusty Zinn as guest artists. Dave Myers also performed at the 1999 Chicago Blues Festival. He was the last living member of the Aces until 2001 when he died in September (James). In March of 2000, Myers's left leg had been amputated due to diabetes (Johnson). Then his right leg was amputated on August 29, 2000. Myers never fully recovered from the surgery.
On September 3, 2001, Myers died at the Waterfront Terrace Nursing Home in Chicago at the age of 74. His funeral was held on Chicago's south side at the Rayner Funeral Home" (Johnson). Dave Myers is survived by his son, David, Jr., two sisters, two grandchildren, and one great grandchild" --- by Latisha Cherrelle Tucker (SHS)

Recorded just after Mick Taylor departed for the Stones, John Mayall eliminated drums entirely on this live recording. With mostly acoustic guitars and John Almond on flutes and sax, Mayall and his band, as his typically overblown liner notes state, "explore seldom-used areas within the framework of low volume music." But it does work. The all-original material is flowing and melodic, with long jazzy grooves that don't lose sight of their bluesy underpinnings. Lyrically, Mayall stretches out a bit into social comment on "The Laws Must Change" on this fine, meditative mood album. --- by Richie Unterberger, AMGUploaded by Bluesfan60, THANKS FOREVER MAN!!!

The first thing that comes to mind when listening to Tiger Walk is the pair of instrumental albums recorded by Jeff Beck in the mid-seventies, Blow by Blow and Wired. Like those two recordings, this outing showcases a fiery, inventive electric guitarist in a rock and jazz-rock setting. Robben Ford, known in recent years for his blues work with his band, the Blue Line, eschews vocals here, teaming up with keyboard funk master Bernie Worrell for some chunky, funky, wah-wah-laden grooves. This music, led by Ford's blazing guitar lines, is more appropriately categorized as instrumental rock than jazz, but the rhythms recall James Brown and Worrell's alma mater, the P-Funk gang, as often as they do those of a hard rock band. Tenor saxophonist Bob Malach turns in a couple of solid solos, and the rhythm section of drummer Steve Jordon and bassist Charlie Drayton cooks throughout. --- by Jim Newsom, AMGUploaded by Bluesfan60, THANKS FOREVER MAN!!!

Jeff Beck returns two years after the ten-years-in-the-making Who Else?, and You Had It Coming isn't surprising just for its rapidity, but for its music. From the moment the electronicized, post-rave beats of "Earthquake" kick off the record, it's clear that Beck isn't content to stay in place -- he's trying to adapt to the modern world. To a certain extent, this isn't an entirely new phenomenon, since each of his records is clearly, inextricably of its time, from the crunching metal of Truth through the breezy jazz fusion of Blow By Blow to the modernized album rock of Guitar Shop. This is just another side of that, as Beck works with electronic music, both noisy and new age introspective. It's a bit clever, actually, since Beck's playing has always been otherworldly, dipping, bending, and sounding like anything other than a normal guitar. The problem is, when he's surrounded by lockstep, processed beats and gurgling synths, his guitar doesn't leap to the forefront and capture attention the way it does on his best recordings. Still, there's something to be said for the effort, because even if it doesn't sound like a Beck record, it isn't a bad record, and it's certainly a helluva lot more successful than Clapton's similar forays into these waters. Besides, knowing that he knocked this out so quickly makes it a little endearing. --- by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMGUploaded by Bluesfan60, THANKS FOREVER MAN!!!

David "Honeyboy" Edwards is one of the last surviving Delta blues warriors and is among the originators of a musical style as evocative and vibrant as any this nation has ever experienced. Edwards' voice, with its ironic, colorful, weary tonal qualities and cutting, keen delivery are contrasted by a crisp, slicing guitar approach. Edwards does not rely on slickness, inventiveness, or niceties; his riffs, lines, phrases, and licks are as aggressive and fiery as his vocals. He showed what real traditional blues singing was all about when he recorded for Blue Suit in 1988. Evidence has reissued that 13-song session in splendid digital glory, as Edwards' triumphant, resounding voice rings through each number. --- by Ron Wynn, AMGUploaded by Bluesfan60, THANKS FOREVER MAN!!!

I hate to say "I told you so" but I told you so. Last night, the Boston Celtics were focused on not only sending a message to the rest of the NBA but they wanted to avenge their March 22nd loss to the New Orleans Hornets. After trailing 60-56 at halftime, the green team clamped down on defense and exploded offensively in the 3rd quarter outscoring the Hornets 32-15 in the quarter. David West and Jannergo Pargo, who dominated in the second half of the last contest were both held in check.
Rajon Rondo established the tempo early and drove often, several times he left leading NBA MVP candidate Chris Paul in the dust, only able to read the back of his jersey as he scored the ball. While CP3 finished with 22 points 10 assists and 3 steals he was still -25 for the game (worst on his entire squad) and Rajon Rondo went for 17 points (on 8-10 shooting), 4 assists and 1 steal and checked in at +28 in 6 fewer minutes of work.
Paul Pierce abused Peja Stojakovich (who couldn't guard a mailbox) and Bonzi Wells (he's in shape..he's round) time and time again, ultimately ending with 27 points, 6 rebounds and a team high 9 assists (he also was a perfect 13-13 from the charity stripe) and Kevin Garnett finished the night with 21 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 block. The tandem were both showered with chants of "MVP!" from the throng of Garden faithful during the game. The Celtics shot just under 60% for the game (44-74 .595) and the outscored the Hornets 56-32 in the second half to win the game going away (we got to see Gino on the Jumbotron again!). The final score was: Boston Celtics 112 New Orleans Hornets 92. The C's have now become the second team in the NBA (Utah Jazz) to defeat every other team in the league at least once this season. At 57-15, Boston now has a 6 game lead on the Detroit Pistons with 10 games left in the regular season.
I fully expect to see Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to move up that damn MVP Top 10 ranking list that scrolls at the bottom of the screen on NBA TV starting on Sunday. It' s time for the rest of the country to recognize and realize that Green is the new Black. Black is the new President and the Boston Celtics are the best team in the NBA. See you all come playoff time.
One.

I know this stuff is pretty basic but I just want to stress the importance of this ep. Along with Bad Brains and Black Flag, (middle class etc.) this was one of the first hardcore punk records to come out. It's one of my favorites as well. This is Dischords first release. Ian Mackaye and the dischord staff folded each and everyone of these by hand and glued them all. I actually dont even like posting dischord stuff on here because I think you should support them, because their business is run how a real records company should be run. I think im justified in saying that.

The band "Extended Versions" was a duo of tall, scary, grimy Austrian leftists (Christof Kurzmann and Helmut Heiland) who made a raucous noise with scratchy guitar, fuzz bass, soprano sax, flute and an overtaxed drum machine. The were influenced by "Suicide" and "The Velvet Underground", and sounded like a less-patient "39 Clocks".As "The More Extended Versions" they released a great cooperation CD with "Cpt. Kirk &.", a band from Hamburg. It was a Robert Wyatt tribute, but it also had Cypress Hill and Epic Soundtracks covers and other stuff which they associated with Wyatt. It was one of those both political and cultural informed projects back in the 90ies of the last century, when leftist activists and cultural protagonists tried to find a mutual way in opposition to the growing nationalism and racism in Germany. Loved this album in those days and listening to it now is still a pleasure. A worthy and intelligent supplement to the discography of Robert Wyatt.

Van Dyke Parks "Discover America" 1972
After reading reviews for other Van Dyke Parks albums, I'm amazed at how easily this one gets overlooked; Mr. Parks certainly has many strong albums which deserve heaping amounts of credit (Song Cycle and Jump! come to mind first), but to me this one is the perfect blend of the artistic sensibilities of "Song Cycle" and the listenability and pop/catchiness of "Clang of the Yankee Reaper" (The albums released just before and after "Discover America").
To my ears, this one has just the right combination of elements from both albums, and has proven to be the one I come back to listen to the most. Some people may gripe that there are a number of covers on this album (as another reviewer mentioned, "Roosevelt in Trinidad" contains a number of the original versions): But this is where Park's talent for instrumentation, arranging and personalizing material shines through. This album swells and swoons in all the right places; it is a funky feverish haze with exquisite instrumentation, arrangements, and just the right mix of artistic pretention and outright feelgood funkiness. "Absolute Classic Masterpieces" documents the dark jangle pop of Felt between the years of 1979 and 1985; it's a best-of collection for a band that always deserved more attention. The tracks run in reverse chronological order, starting with "Primitive Painters," a song that charts the territory where The Cocteau Twins, The Fall, and The Smiths overlap, and ending with the very first demo single "Index." The order of the tracks means that you are listening to the band devolve into its influences, and the effect is enjoyable. "Primitive Painters" is a lost treat if ever one existed; along with the next three tracks, it was produced by Robin Guthrie of The Cocteau Twins. "Primitive Painters" also features Elizabeth Frazer of The Cocteau Twins on vocals. Guthrie is not the only famed producer whose work appears here; three John Leckie tracks are also included, from the "Strange Idols Pattern & Other Short Stories" album. While most of the slower songs appear toward the end of the album, making it a somewhat sleepy affair as it winds down, there are charms like "The World Is as Soft as Lace" to liven things up. "Penelope Tree" sounds a bit like Lou Reed fronting The Cure. There's great material to be found throughout the work of Felt, so this collection would work regardless of its running order. Newcomers looking for their first Felt album should start here, with the knowledge that there is quite a bit of dark atmosphere layered over the pop charms within. While these songs might not be masterpieces, as the album title would have you believe, there are many near-masterpieces of moody jangle pop just waiting to be rediscovered.

... In a nutshell, Dyke (real name Arlester Christian… you can guess why he liked the nickname better!) was born in Buffalo, NY, got serious about music and playing bass in Phoenix, played the local circuit there for a while. James Brown at one point saw him as a serious rival. It's surprising to me how overlooked he is, even in a scene where guys like keb darge have made a business out of digging crates and publishing comps. (dyke's the first to mention the word 'funk' in a song title, I think.) some critics say he's too JB-derivative, I'd say he and JB both pushed the evolution of R&B into funk hard, JB being the more talented and original of the two. The sound's coarse and raw. Lots of hip-hop/rap types've sampled his stuff – prince, ice cube, tupac… but D&TB is generally under the radar. He wrote 'funky broadway', but most people think that's Wilson Pickett's tune. He was shot and killed at the age of 27, would've been interesting what he'd have come up with if he'd lived as long as JB. Coupla highlights – 'shotgun slim', 'we got more soul' (those horn stabs when he's doing the call-outs are killer), 'runaway people'… if you're only going to check out one side, go for CD2, that's his Hollywood stuff ('68-'70), CD1's from the Phoenix days ('66-'67) and shows him getting his stuff together. the comp itself does a solid job of introducing his work. Tags and artwork should be fine, let me know if there's a problem with anything.
Anyway, enough rambling. Hope you enjoy this as much as I do, and thx for an incredible blog." - by ksn

Berry laid a lot of good sounds on me that hot july afternoon, but a dozen songs later, the first was still the best.A new group with a new sound! "Berry, the Contours have got themselves a smash hit", were my exact words. And I didn't leave the office until I had a copy securely in my possession. - liner notes by Paul Drew
The Contours "Do You Love Me" 1962 (Motown Rec)
The first LP released on Gordy Records is also the Contours' first and only regular album release on Motown; a later collection also titled Do You Love Me was a greatest-hits compilation. This is worth a few bucks if you can find a copy. Three cuts were released on the Motown label before they were switched to Gordy ("The Stretch," "Funny," and "Whole Lotta Woman"); all stiffed. On Gordy, the group enjoyed their biggest hit the first time out in "Do You Love Me." "You Better Get In Line," a slick dance number, died as the flipside of "Shake Sherrie." A lively "You Must Be Love" has Billy Gordon swapping leads with Joe Billingslea. "Shake Sherrie" has a looping beat, a wandering baritone sax, and incredulous vocals from Gordon, Billingslea, Sylvester Potts, Billy Hogg, and Hubert Johnson. The rest suffer from a lack of identity; neither the group nor Motown had defined their sound when these were cut. ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide1. Do You Love Me 2. "That's Swift" - Instrumentals from the Norman Petty Vaults / VA
"That's Swift" compiles the very best of the non-Fireballs rock instrumentals that Norman Petty cut in the early 1960s, and a rocking little disc it is too. Established professionals like Canada's successful Wes Dakus' Rebels rub shoulders with obscure outfits such as the Tiaras and the Chandelles, all showcasing the patented excitement that Petty pioneered with the Fireballs. There's R&B flavoured items from the Gliders and the Chances, moody melodies from the Techniques, King Pins and Bentleys, and several quasi-surf classics such as 'Jetster', 'Riptide' and 'Termites'. Most of the acts are from New Mexico and West Texas, and feature local guitar heroes like John Wagner (Five Counts) and Ysidro Garcia (Gliders). As with all of Ace's releases featuring Norman Petty-produced material, "That's Swift" benefits from years of meticulous tape research, and thus boasts much unissued material and top-notch sound. The packed booklet goes into depth about these recordings, the bands that cut them, and Petty's world-renowned production techniques. Utterly essential for all instrumental and Norman Petty fans alike. - Amazon

Their undeniably funny lyrics and on-stage antics might have suggested a simple troupe of clowns, but Coasters records are no mere novelties -- their material, supplied by the legendary team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, is too witty, their arrangements too well-crafted, and the group itself too musically proficient. That engaging and infectious combination made them one of the most popular early R&B/rock & roll acts, as well as one of the most consistently entertaining doo wop/vocal groups of all time.

THE DEE-RANGERS "Five Spanish Minutes"
... I guess it's a good thing we don't have to rely on hype to know what's good, right? Well, some of us don't, I suppose. The garage freaks in Europe seem to know what's up, as these guys have been invited to play at some pretty high-profile festivals over the past year or so, including Gearfest in Sweden this past June, the Primitive 2 Dutch International Garage Festival in July, and they're booked for the Spanish Beat Goes On festival that's taking place just a couple of weeks from now. And there's good reason why they're finally getting this much-deserved exposure. While these guys have been kicking some serious garage-punk ass for quite a while now, accumulating quite an impressive discography of singles on such great labels as Estrus, Rockin' Bones, and Munster, they haven't been able to put forth that one really great record that might just push them to the top of the heap… that is, perhaps, until now. Quite frankly,Five Spanish Minutes was one of the best rock'n'roll releases of 2005, yet unfortunately I don't think many people on this side of the Atlantic even knew about it. In fact, only one person even bothered to list it in the Best Albums of 2005 topic on the message board (go figure). This is simply a fantastic album, and, in this humble reviewer's opinion, is easily the band's best to date (the other two being 2002's So Far Out So Good and 2003's Pretty Ugly Beat—both on the now defunct White Jazz label). This new LP, which was released towards the tail-end of 2005 on Germany's Screaming Apple Records, is ripe with organ-driven, hip-shakin', swingin' '60s-flavored garage rock, and the album is not short on great songwriting that includes powerful hooks that make it one of the most memorable LPs I've heard in quite some time. But what impressed me most about this album was the band's obvious departure from the more Fleshtones-influenced sound of their previous records. I don't know if "matured" is the word I really wanna use here (since maturing in rock'n'roll is usually so closely related to suddenly sucking ass), but it's clear to me that they've really come into their own on this release and have nailed down a sound that is anything but bland or predictable retro-garage. Indeed, it's records like this that clearly show that this often overly crowded genre still has the potential to produce exciting music that takes the best elements of the past and throws them at ya with enough verocity that you can't help but be optimistic about the future of garage rock. Let's just hope that the Dee Rangers continue to be a part of that future. Enjoy the MP3s below. They're my top picks from Five Spanish Minutes. (garagepunk.com)

Absolutely essential for any one who loves urban electric blues. The singing is absolutely incredible --one of the most powerful and expressive voices in the history of the blues. His guitar playing, rhythmic drive, and arrangements are also excellent and unique-he died soon after these 2 albums were recorded just as he seemed about to break out into stardom. His slow songs exhibit a soulfulness that is incomparable and the faster songs have a drive and excitement that is also beyond compare. You can't go wrong with these two albums--highest recommendation possible. (Amazon)traxfromwax:

The Leather Nun once shocked an audience by showing a porno movie at a concert. While Sweden is often seen as the country that spawned disco queens ABBA, Leather Nun are its bastard sons. Careening from garage rock to goth and industrial, Leather Nun became cult heroes in their native land. Naming themselves after a London stripper, Leather Nun was formed in Goteborg, Sweden, in 1979 by Jonas Almqvist (vocals), Bengt "Aron" Aronsson (guitar), Freddie Wadling (bass), and Gert Claesson (drums). Inspired by both Throbbing Gristle and Lou Reed (Almqvist's half-spoken, half-sung vocals were obviously patterned after Reed's), Leather Nun recorded their debut EP, "Slow Death", in 1979. Wadling left Leather Nun in 1982 and joined Blue for Two. A handful of singles followed before Leather Nun released their first LP, "Alive", in 1985. The group's imported singles found their way onto U.S. college radio stations, earning substantial airplay with "Pink House," a deadpan parody of John Mellencamp's "Pink Houses." Leather Nun's American audience eventually eclipsed their small following in Sweden as they never took off at home. In 1988, Leather Nun were reviewed in Rolling Stone magazine, rare mainstream media coverage for the band. Aronsson recorded a solo album, "Purification", as Sister Aaron in 1993. [Source: AMG]1. This has been the smoothest writing week for me in about a month. I did almost experience a problem with my mega post of the week about the Sprite Curse (it was supposed to go up last month but I ran into a wall while investigating it) but I was able to post it up (and edit it further this morning) with no problem.I've also moved into sole possession of 1st place in Dallas Penn's NCAA Tournament Pick 'Em...too bad I didn't pick past the Final Four. This week several albums that will be dropping soon hit the internet and the bloggerverse, chief among them being the three I'll be reviewing today. In order they'll be LMNO & Kev Brown's "Selective Hearing", AZ's "Undeniable" and the long awaited C.R.A.C Knuckles "The Piece Talks".
Since so many of you are curious to hear (or read) my take on these albums I won't waste any more time and just get to business. I don't rate albums on a scale or assign them a numerical value out of 5 or 10, instead I merely answer the all important question of "Is it worth buying or not?". Here's how my "Cop It Or Not" ratings system breaks down below:
Oh No! This CD is a drink coaster/table balancer/doorstop/gerbil/hamster room divider/frisbee/discus/makeshift shield/last ditch choice for a visor/alternate shuriken choice. Sell this shit to whoever is dumb enough to buy it from you.
Maeby (Maybe)! Depending on your own set of personal preferences you might like this joint. Give it a listen first to see if it's in your lane or not.
Mos Def! Cop the album when it drops...'Nuff said.I drop bombs like bad receivers © AG
LMNO and Kev Brown collaborated on a new project called "Selective Hearing". Kev Brown is a well respected Hip Hop producer from the Maryland/D.C. area and LMNO is a West Coast rhyme veteran with some solo classic under his belt as well as some classic material recorded with his group The Visionaries (if you've never heard "Blessings" or "If You Can't Say Love" then I pity you, fool). LMNO is also a Christian (with some Rastafarian undertones) and he doesn't hesitate to mention it in his rhymes. Did the Christian Rap aspect hurt the album at all in my opinion? Read below:Best Joints: Fanfare, The Beat Tape, Who's That, Show Up, Selective Hearing, Get Away (This song references camping, hiking, veggie links, soy bacon and Jesus...I still like it. Kev Brown, you're a beast!), The Cause, We Got This, Unheard (Jesus Alert!), Make A Way, Raise
Hot Garbage: N/A
Dart's Take: If you're a fan of LMNO, The Visionaries or Kev Brown than this album is a no brainer definite buy already. For those of you not familiar with LMNO (God forbid you've never at least heard "Grin And Bear It") at all then his rhyme style might grate on your nerves. Between Kev Brown's ill production work and verses plus guest appearances from Oh No, Dudley Perkins, Georgia Anne Muldrow ("I stay woke") and Ariano this is a nice album (though it's a little on the short side).
The bonus is the Kev Brown instrumentals (which I've been killing!) more than make up for the length of the album. I give this one a recommended maybe because some people don't expect a dude to profess his love for Jesus repeatedly while his rhyming. Definitely worth checking out.

AZ is one of my favorite all time emcees and he has been since I heard his first recorded verse on Nas' "Life's A Bitch" back in 1994. Now, almost 15 years later the one known as The Visualizer hasn't shown a sign any signs of rust. Ever since his 2002 LP "Aziatic" he's been on a roll making excellent album after excellent album, does AZ's hot streak continue? Read my take on it below:Best Joints: The Game Don't Stop, Superstar, Life On The Line, Fire, What Would You Do, Dead End, Parking Lot Pimpin', Undeniable, Go Getta (between this joint and the Styles P song, Ray J's on quite a run!), Now I Know, A. Game, The Hardest, You Can't Be Serious (Bonus track)
Hot Garbage: N/A
Dart's Take: AZ's masterful flow allows him to kill tracks that 80% of rappers would sound absolutely horrible on. Every track he's on is an enjoyable listen because AZ can carry the listeners attention and never bore you. He absolutely kills joints like "The Game Don't Stop", "Life On The Line", "Fire", "Dead End" and "Parkin' Lot Pimpin". I have been playing this album damn near nonstop since I first got it (even during this review). I give this a mos def. Go out and cop it April 1st when it hits stores and iTunes.

Blu (Lifted EP, Below The Heavens, Powders & Oils) and Ta'Raach (LOVEE, The Fevers, The Breakfast Club) are C.R.A.C Knuckles (pronounced "crass"). They have both collaborated on the hotly anticipated LP "The Piece Talks". If you've ever listened to Blu's tracks off of his MySpace page or heard any of Ta'Raach's music with The Lovelution then you'll know that it's going to be some off the wall type shit. Did the final product live up to all of the hype from all of the blogs that have been talking about it for months? I'll let you all know right now:Best Joints: What Up (Part2), Buy Me Lunch, Love Don't, Major Way, Activate Too, CRACHAUSE, Respect, Pop Dem Boyz, 2.16.05, Mr. Big Fizz, Chill, Hello!?, Go!, Activate...As Well, Bullet Through Me, Credits, Shake & Ready (listen past the phone conversation labeled "Ready" and there are two more songs I've named "Shake" and "Ready" (it was either that or "One Two").
Hot Garbage: N/A (This album might frustrate some people...I'll get into it all in detail below)
Dart's Take: This album isn't just straightforward beats and rhymes all the way through. There are some tracks that are just mostly music with ill instrumentation and arrangements. Tracks like "Buy Me Lunch", "CRACHAUSE" and "Credits" don't have any rhymin' on them at all. Joints like "What Up (Part2)", "Major Way","2.16.05", "Chill", "Hello!?", "Activate Too" and "As Well" are mad short. Some songs are on the "off the wall" side ("Buy Me Lunch", "Go!", "Bullet Through Me" and "Ready") and may throw some people off.
After it initially leaked from Nobodysmiling.com, it made the rounds to every music site and blog. Robbie on Unkut.com didn't know what to make of it. Some posters on Okayplayer thought it was too unfocused and all over the place. A few heads that had only just heard of Blu and never heard any of Ta'Raachs previous material were completely lost like Bobby and Cindy Brady on a vacation to the Grand Canyon.
My advice is not to overthink it, just play the whole album and listen to it. Go for a walk. Ride the train. Take a drive and just let it play. I guarantee you won't be able to get "Buy Me Lunch" out of your head (Just like the many bloggers that have had this album for months and not once did it leak)
A lot of people wanted this whole project to be like "Love Don't", "Respect" and "Pop Dem Boyz" but you can't take artists and expect them to put restraints on their creativity because you as a listener aren't more open minded. Just go with it. I give this album a mos def, easy. Do the right thing this April 22nd and cop it.

Jacobs is generally included among blues music greats: his revolutionary harmonica technique has earned comparisons to Charlie Parker and Jimi Hendrix in its impact: There were great musicians before and after, but Jacobs' virtuosity and musical innovations reached heights of expression never previously imagined, and fundamentally altered many listeners' expectations of what was possible on blues harmonica. His body of work earned Little Walter a spot in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the sideman category on March 10, 2008.
Jacobs' own career took off when he recorded as a bandleader for Chess' subsidiary label Checker Records on 12 May 1952; the first completed take of the first song attempted at his debut session was a hit, spending eight weeks in the #1 position on the Billboard magazine R&B charts - the song was "Juke", and it was the first and only harmonica instrumental to become a #1 hit on the R&B charts. (Three other harmonica instrumentals by Little Walter also reached the Billboard R&B top 10: "Off the Wall" reached #8, "Roller Coaster" achieved #6, and "Sad Hours" reached the #2 position while Juke was still on the charts.) "Juke" was the biggest hit to date for Chess and its affiliated labels, and secured Walter's position on the Chess artist roster for the next decade. Little Walter scored fourteen top-ten hits on the R&B charts between 1952 and 1958, including two #1 hits (the second being "My Babe" in 1955), a feat never achieved by his former boss Waters, nor by his fellow Chess blues artists Howling Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson. Many of Walter's numbers were originals which he, or Chess A&R man, Willie Dixon wrote. In general his sound was more modern and uptempo than the popular Chicago blues of the day, with a jazzier feel than other contemporary blues harmonica players.
His legacy has been enormous: he is widely credited by blues historians as the artist primarily responsible for establishing the standard vocabulary for modern blues and blues rock harmonica players. - His influence can be heard in virtually every modern blues harp player who came along in his wake, from blues greats such as Junior Wells, James Cotton, George "Harmonica" Smith, Carey Bell, and Big Walter Horton, through modern-day masters Kim Wilson, Rod Piazza, William Clarke, and Charlie Musselwhite, in addition to blues-rock crossover artists such as Paul Butterfield and John Popper of Blues Traveler.

Last night, the Boston Celtics bodied the Phoenix Suns 117-97 in front of a national audience (ESPN aired the game) to stop a two game skid and raise their record to an NBA best 56-15. On Friday, the Celtics host the New Orleans Hornets, the one team in the entire league they've played and not beaten. I guarantee you that David West will not get off too many open jumpers on that night. My sister, brother in law and mother all went to the game and I watched it at home switching back in forth between Comcast Sportsnet and ESPN.Gordan Giricek couldn't guard a damn lamp! Steve Nash got shook by Rondo all night and Kendrick "The Incredible Hulk" Perkins held it down in the middle. Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce were unstoppable and Ray Allen was a decoy and racked up 8 assists while knocking down jumpers at opportune times.
The Celtics are looking at this game on Friday as their final chance to send a message to the entire NBA that they are the team to beat come playoff time. Just 11 games left to go in this regular season while three squads battle for the honor of being crushed by the Green machine in the first round of the 2008 NBA Playoffs. Atlanta, New Jersey or Indiana? It's all good!
One.

1986
Kurtis Blow is the first Hip Hop artist to appear in a commercial for a soft drink. This year, Kurtis Blow would star in the film "Krush Groove" and record the final hit of his recording career "If I Ruled The World". Kurtis Blow's style was too old school and his career went into decline. In 1988, he released "Back By Popular Demand" to a lukewarm reception and abysmal sales. The Hip Hop audience had moved on to acts like Rakim, KRS One, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Public Enemy, Ice T and N.W.A. He retired from rapping shortly afterwards.
1990
Heavy D. & The Boyz were riding the success of their breakout album "Big Tyme" when they appeared in their Sprite commercial. Months after the spot first aired, Trouble T. Roy of The Boyz died in a freak accident while on tour. In 1991, a celebrity basketball game/concert starring Heavy D. & The Boyz was oversold and didn't have sufficient security in place leading to a stampede that killed 9 people and injured hundreds. Both incidents sank Heavy D into a long depression (that he has long since emerged from).
1991
Kid N' Play was hot off of their hit album "Funhouse" and their successful film "House Party" when they hawked the lymony beverage. Kid N' Play would release one more album ("Face The Nation") as well as several movies before their deal with Select Records dissolved and fourth album tentatively titled "Void" was shelved after the lukewarm sales of the "House Party 3" soundtrack and their final single "Bounce".
Kid N' Play broke up officially in 1995 and shortly thereafter Play's clothing line IV Plai and his line of barbershops called Playtime were in dire financial straits. Soon, Play's marriage would end and he'd be charged with failure to pay child support. Kid was able to continue working as a producer, actor, show host and a touring stand up comedian. Play was recently in a car accident but escaped with minor injuries.

1993
Jermaine Dupri's newest discovery Kriss Kross went quadruple Platinum with their first album "Totally Krossed Out" and they had released their second LP "Da Bomb" when they appeared in their Sprite ad. Their sophomore album barely went Platinum and their singles sold nowhere as well as the previous project.
Group member Chris Kelly also had to deal with issues stemming from him having leukemia, Jermaine Dupri focused on Da Brat, Xscape and outside production. When Kriss Kross finally returned in 1996 with the "Young, Rich & Dangerous" EP they managed two minor hits and barely went Gold. They claim to have had material for a fourth album for years but Jermaine Dupri hasn't even attempted to get back to them. I guess he missed the bus.
1994
A Tribe Called Quest was the next group to appear in a Sprite commercial. They had just come off up their classic "Midnight Marauders" album and they were breaking into the mainstream market. In 1996, they would release their least acclaimed project by both fans and critics "Beats, Rhymes and Life". Tribe's newest album yeilded only two singles and neither of them fared very well. Two years later, they announced that they would break up and "The Love Movement" would be their final album as a group.
Shortly thereafter, Q Tip, Phife and Ali Shaheed Muhammad would all release other projects. Phife's "Da Ventilation LP" was filled with several scathing verses aimed at Tip. Eventually, all beefs were deaded and A Tribe Called Quest got back together and toured last summer. As of the writing of this blog, no album is forthcoming.
1995
Large Professor appeared in a Sprite commercial with Grand Puba. He had signed a solo deal with Geffen Records to release his album titled "The LP". He released two singles and videos for the songs "Mad Scientist" and "Ijusswannachill". The singles did moderately well but Geffen expected them to do a lot better sales and chartswise. Politics, red tape and internal drama at the label led to "The LP" being shelved and Large Professor was released from his deal. Large Professor didn't release a solo album until 2002 when his Matador LP "1st Class" hit shelves (when you bought it online you got a copy of "The LP" along with it).
Grand Puba was fresh off the release of his new LP "2000". The album failed to produce hits like his previous album did and didn't sell very well. Grand Puba didn't release another solo album until his indie LP "Understand This" in 2001. He was recorded several projects with Brand Nubian who continue to go strong.
Pete Rock & CL Smooth appeared in the other Sprite commercial featuring two emcee freestyling in the studio. Shortly after it first hit the air, the group announced that they were breaking up after twoclassic efforts that failed to move a significant amount of units. Pete Rock released several project and featured CL several times in recent years but CL Smooth has since come out and said that they'd never work together again. CL Smooth has released the mixtape "Man On Fire"and the LP "American Me" last year on Shaman Work while earlier this year Pete Rock dropped "NY's Finest".
1997/98
The Lost Boyz appeared in a new Sprite campaign based on the classic film "Wild Style". The Lost Boyz had gone Gold with their two previous projects and were working on their third album "LB IV Life". In March 1999, group member Freaky Tah was shot and killed months before the album could be released. It would be the first time that an LB album would fail to sell well. They had a breif reunion before group member DJ Spigg Nice would be found guilty on several counts of armed robbery and sentenced to 37 years in jail.
Nas and AZ appeared together in another Sprite commercial based on Double Trouble's legendary "Stoop Rap". Nas would go on to record his two most critically panned projects "I Am" and "Nastadamus" while AZ would release his album "Pieces Of A Man" that would just come short of going Gold. Due to problems at his record label AZ was released from his deal.
AZ made the independent album "S.O.S.A. (Save Our Streets, AZ)" and that sold an excess of 100,000 copies independently which secured him another deal. His subsequent major label albums have all had dissapointing sales but AZ is still one of the most well respected lyricists in all of Hip Hop. His new album "Undeniable" drops April 1st, 2008.
1998
Sprite unleashes the new Voltron ad campaign on the public featuring different emcees and groups representing different regions of the country and they each occupied one of Voltrons lions:
Goodie Mob was enjoying the success that came with their sophomore album "Still Standing". Soon they'd switch labels and change their sound on the third LP, the critically panned and commercially disappointing "World Party". The fallout from "World Party" lead to Cee Lo leaving the group. The group released two more projects on the indie circuit and have since reunited. An album is reportedly forthcoming.
Mack 10 of Westside Connection was fresh off of his album "The Recipe". His subsequent albums began to sell less and less and his marriage to T-Boz of TLC turned ugly in a short time. He was released from his label deal and signed with Cash Money Records, when that album also failed to move units he was released from that deal as well. He is still the owner of his own record label but he's never returned to his former place in the Rap world.
Fat Joe's career actually took off in 1998 and he began to make hit singles and pervade the mainstream market. Ever since 2005, beginning with his album "All Or Nothing" his albums have been selling less and less and his music is becoming less and less inspired since he entered a feud with 50 Cent who won't let up on him even for a moment. His last two albums "Me, Myself And I" and "The Elephant In The Room" have had meager sales and the Terror Squad as we knew it is no more.
Common was between two classic albums "One Day It Will All Make Sense" and "Like Water For Chocolate". Soon afterwards, he'd enter a relationship with Erykah Badu and change his image even more than he had previously. This lead to his worst received album "Electric Circus". It wasn't until three years later when Kanye West took the reigns and cosigned Common that his career took off again. He is now one of the biggest artists and up and coming actors in the industry today.
1999
Sprite began a new campaign based on the Kung Fu classic film "The Five Deadly Venoms" but in the place of the original Venoms are five female emcees:
Kool Keith appeared as a villain in the commercials that did battle with the Venoms. His major label debut album "Black Elvis" Lost In Space" was about to drop on Ruffhouse/Columbia. His vinyl had an odd printing defect in which the entire first run of his album's vinyl pressing repeated side A an all four sides of the two piece vinyl. To make things worse, shortly after his album was released Ruffhouse/Columbia ceased operations and the project wasn't promoted well and few copies were pressed. Kool Keith is back to recording underground albums for his core audience.
Eve was coming off of her double Platinum debut album when she appeared in this commercial. Even though she's had hits, film roles and a television show her sales have gone down with each album (from double Platinum to Platinum to Gold). Her present project "Here I Am" had two singles released that went nowhere and it's been pushed back a full year since "Tambourine" first came out at the time of this writing. Ya gotta love Aftermath!
Angie Martinez released her albums "Up Close And Personal" and "Animal House" to modest sales after appearing in this commercial. She's managed a few hits in her rapping career and has since retired from recording.
Amil was pretty much just used for guest appearances and hooks when she appeared in these commercials. Her album "All Money Is Legal" was released in 2000 and it failed to sell or produce a hit after "4 Da Fam" and "I Got That" featuring Beyonce both caught a brick. Amil was relesed from her Roc A Fella deal and is currentlty working on an indie project.
Mia X had released three well recieved albums on No Limit Records and was riding the success of her 1998 album "Mama Drama" when she appeared in this Sprite campaign. She ended up leaving No Limit Records shortly thereafter and as of this time she has never recorded another album although she did appear on a mixtape back in 2006.
2000
Sprite started up a new campaign called "What Are You Thinking?" that featured artists in scenarios where people and their own prejudices and issues with racial stereotypes were examined:
Mos Def has since failed to get back to the heights that he was at when he recorded "Black On Both Sides". His albums "The New Danger" and "True Magic" have both failed commercially. His marriage of 10 years also fell apart in 2005 and he's been dogged by accusations that he hasn't been paying child support in full.
Pharoahe Monch had a 7 year gap between studio albums (2000's "Internal Affairs" and 2007's "Desire") and his long rumored deal with Interscope's Shady Records fell through at the last minute. Several songs that should've made that album couldn't due to sample clearance issues.
Other victims of the Sprite Curse:
Hi-Five: After enjoying much success, shortly after Hi-Fives Sprite commercial aired in 1992 one of their members (Roderick "Pooh" Clark) was seriously injured in a car accident and was never able to perform again. Their next album flopped, they broke up and lead singer Tony Thompson went solo. He was found dead in June 2007 in what has been called a huffing accident.
EnVogue: Found out after the release of their album "Funky Divas" that they signed a bad deal that gave them a poor percentage of royalties. They were broke although they had every possible accolade imaginable. Dawn Robinson left in 1997 just to sign with Aftermath. Wow.
Grant Hill: Between 200o-2004 Grant Hill's ankle only allowed him to play in 47 total games. He almost died from complications caused by a staph infection in 2003.
Keith Murray: Did a voice over for a Sprite commercial back in 1996. He went to jail in 1999 and got out in 2001. He signed to Def Jam and got into a fight in the Def Jam offices because they failed to properly promote his project. He was dropped from Def Jam two weeks before his album "He's Keith Murray!" was released.
Allen Iverson: A scrapped Hip Hop album on MCA Records and some trouble with the law lie amongst a disappointing showing as captain of the USA Men's Basketball Team at the Summer Olympics. C0-captain Tim Duncan also appeared in a Sprite ad as well. Coincidence?
Kobe Bryant: Eagle, Colorado in 2003 Kobe Bryant allegedly sexually assaulted a 19 year old hotel employee. This commercial was pulled shortly after he was charged along with several other endorsements.

One of the mightiest trios in music - Grant Hart, Greg Norton and Bob Mould’s HÜSKER DÜ were one of the bands that you just couldn’t ignore in the 80s and probably one of the most influental rock bands ever. Who wouldn’t remember the endless debates over “New Day Rising” («Is this still Punk????») or “Candy Apple Grey” («Major labels support nuclear war!!!!!»). At least for me, things were always very clear: The “fastest record in the world” never impressed me too much (”Land Speed Record”), though “Everything falls apart” was like a punch in the testicles. But to me, “New Day Rising” has been one of my all time fave albums since it came out (and the euro tour that followed was fantastic too!). And “Candy Apple Grey” is one milestone too, couldn’t count the times that “Eifel Tower high” or “Don’t wanna know if you’re lonely” saved my life.
In fact, looking back over the band’s career, it’s kinda obvious that the HC days weren’t the “true” HüDü at all - as you can hear, it started pretty experimental with this one, then it got fast and faster, before things got really exciting. When you listen to the later Hüsker Dü, it makes you wonder how “Grunge” could have been reviewed as a refreshing style in the 90s. Dammit, they all owe to Hüsker Dü!
These two songs may not be my favourite pick when it comes to the Hüskers, but I still ove this record. Everything seems like in a fetal state here: The song writing, the musicianship, even the production by later super-knob-turner Steve Fjelstad: They all were still learning, so it seems. Maybe that’s what always makes me compare this with the first BIG BLACK 12″. As amateurish (never forget - the adjective come from the latin verb “amare” which means “to love”!) as this may sound, it’s totally HÜSKER DÜ already, you will recognize it at once, I’m sure.
User comment: By: Fernando"Fernando: So you still believe in concepts such as "truth". I see." Of course! Plato rules :D And the Hüskers agree; otherwise what's "The biggest lie" about?
User comment: By: AdminFernando: So you still believe in concepts such as "truth". I see. Yeah Justin - Peter and I are the duo infernale of blogging!
User comment: By: justinFirst the Worst and now Husker Du, you and Peter really know how to tag team don't you? You guys have reminded me of my appreciation for this band. "amare" huh, I can go with that. Thanx for another terrific post.
User comment: By: Janah, HÜSKA! thanks for this great post. wonderful band and an extreme good lucking band when watching their (promo) photos, ha ha. i remember with age 15 or 16 listening to everything falls apart with my then girl friend and she laughed about me because i wasnt able to open her bra. ha! nothing felt apart. oh yeah, always love this "in a free land", the lang speed record for sure, aber i think i am on erich side. metal circus is so fantastic but new day rising is also my favorite one. i mean, girl who lives an heaven hill or i apologize... does anyone also likes the Flip your Wig Record? love that too...makes no sense at all. too young to saw them live, is that true that bob mould played from the beginning (or at least on the european tours) on that flying v guitar? cheers jan P:S: erich, you will get sth. in the post in 2 weeks :)
User comment: By: FernandoI guess the easiest answer comes taking 'music' in a wide meaning, like pop music, which is a complex, vielseitiger form of art, that includes lyrics, theatrics and pose and even clothes and hairdos, haha. The lie wouldn't be the music itself then, but the lyrics, the pose. Like retropunk, hahaha. Besides that, pure music can be used to give a false image like, say, when Bach's Brandenburgischer concerts are used on TV to glorify the parades of power, implying its deep harmony. Moreover, if music is expression, feeling, or language, there's always a theoretical possibility of faking all that, isn't it.
User comment: By: AdminHow can you lie with / thru music, Fernando?
User comment: By: FernandoWell, since nobody's mentioning Zen arcade, I do. I loved that one, too. I think "Amusement" has some Joy Division in it (check, say, Means to an end from Closer), maybe this confirms a bit what Pedro said. Yeah, the demos sound so different. Eric from SILT had this great post full of rarities, there's a gig from ca 7/81 that, if memory serves, sounds more like this single, but it was recorded around the same time as Land speed record. So, probably these guys played a totally different repertoire depending of... who knows what. As for true music... Der Jargon der Eigentlichkeit or what? haha. But then it may have still some meaning, as (quite obviously methinks) one can lie with / thru music Saludos :)
User comment: By: AdminYes Pedro - totally agree. Talking about "true" music is in fact rather idiotic. Of course, I only meant that I prefer the latter HüDü. Didn't know that the band picked these songs in order to sound different. The early demos do sound totally different. Frank: Never forget - Peter and I have unmonster cocks. I guess that explains it all.
User comment: By: Frank MossiI don't like this 7". But I think it's just INCREDIBLE to see all the rare records Peter and you are posting. I'm so JEALOUS!!!! :-)
Visit here to subscribe to these commentsUser comment: By: Pedro CarvalhoThere's a story about this firs single being as "experimental" and slow as it is as a popularity measure to win the college radio crowd because bands like PIL were the rage at the time. Makes sense I guess, because the early demos sound much more like the Ramones or even like their own subsequent records than this EP. So I guess this is not the "true Dü" after all. Maybe there isn't one, hehe.

Flying Saucer Attack - Further

Time Bomb High School
